7th International Workshop on
Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens
CD Antigens Section

It is suprising how few CD antibody hybridoma clones or transfectants are freely available. Since the days are long gone that yet another clone of some interesting CD antibody could mean a fortune to your lab, why not make it available to the scientific community? We thus encourage workshop participants to submit their CD antibody clones to a common resource.

We have worked out a project with the German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures (DSMZ) at Braunschweig, Germany to establish and maintain a collection of well-defined hybridomas against CD antigens.

The DSMZ - Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH (German Collection of Microorganisms and Cell Cultures) is an independent, non-profit organization dedicated to the acquisition, characterization and identification, preservation and distribution of Bacteria, Archaea, fungi, plasmids, phages, human and animal cell lines, plant cell cultures and plant viruses.

The goal is to have each CD represented by at least one reference antibody. Each of these clones is certified to be free of microbial contamination according to cell banking standards. In addition, to make this collection a particularly valuable resource to the scientific community, hybridoma-specific features are also being routinely assessed:

  • antibody subclass is verified using ELISA
  • antibody production in the supernatant is quantitated by ELISA,
  • the proportion of Ig-producing hybridoma cells is specified by cytoplasmic immunofluorescence (>80%)
  • antibody specificity is checked on appropriate target cells

Only hybridomas that were assigned a CD designation at one of the International Workshops on Human Leucocyte Differentiation Antigens are elegible to this collection. They must be submitted to the DSMZ using the standard accession form (WordPerfect v6.1) mentioning "CD Antibody Collection".

Scientists interested in submitting a culture should contact Dr. H. Quentmeier (Phone +49 531 2616 165) at DSMZ before sending off any samples. As a rule, new entries at DSMZ are being processed starting every quarter (1.1., 1.4., 1.7., 1.9.) and thus should have arrived well before then.

Please remember that in order to make high-quality hybridomas available for distribution, the starting material also has to be of superior quality. Obviously, the DSMZ cannot be held responsible for re-cloning your cells and will return cultures not meeting our standards for further refinement by the submitter.

Please note as well, that releasing your cell line will make it available only for research purposes. You may still license the clone to a company at any time.

For any further questions, please contact Dr. H. Quentmeier at DSMZ or the CD Antigens Section. As an added incentive to participate while this Workshop lasts, we will cover transportation costs for your samples. If your're interested, please contact the CD Antigens Section about support.
